Approach

A practical philosophy of learning, shaped by real clinical practice and the realities of decision-making

Over the years, alongside clinical work, I’ve been involved in teaching in different forms, working with learners in university settings, in clinical supervision, and through workshops and conference teaching in the UK and internationally. Across all of these settings, one of the things that has interested me most is not just what clinicians know, but how they make decisions in real clinical situations.

In day-to-day practice, decisions are rarely made with complete information or unlimited time. Conversations matter, context matters, and each person brings their own story, concerns and expectations to a consultation. Learning to work in that kind of environment is a big part of devleoping as a clinician, but it’s not always something that is easy to teach or easy to assess.

The education work I’m involved in is largely built around that space between theory and practice, where clinicians are trying to make sense of information, work with uncertainty, and make responsible decisions with the person in front of them. A lot of this comes down to clinical reasoning, professional judgement, reflection on practice, and understanding people, not just understanding conditions.

The courses, workshops and other learning linked to this site are built around real practice, real scenarios, real decisions, and the kinds of situations clinicians recognise from their own working lives. The aim is to create learning that feels relevant to practice and that supports people to keep developing over time, not just to complete a course and move on.

For me, education has always been closely linked to practice, where practice raises the questions, and education gives us space to think about them properly.
